Rebecca Haysom was born in Johannesburg and holds a Fine Arts degree from UCT (2005) as well as a bachelor of arts in English Literature from WITS (2011). Her artistic practice reflects a strong influence from literature. Working in the form of intimate narrative collages, as well as playful installation elements that make use of craft materials like paper maché, she presents scenes that seem to come out of alternative folktales, both affectionately yearning for, and irreverently undermining, ideas of romance. Using images from both art history and glossy magazines these revisionings make it unclear who is prey or predator and often celebrate a more playful and less fixed view of the world.
She works from her studio in Prince Albert from where she also teaches Drawing with Mindfulness online. Her and her husband Garfield Taylor are currently busy renovating and setting up artists’ and writers’ residency spaces at Curious Prince for visiting makers and thinkers.
