Tie-Dye Magic at Prince Albert Open Studios
Ready to twist, fold, and splash your world with colour? Join Tiaan van Deventer of ArtLap for a hands-on tie-dye workshop that promises creativity, fun, and a kaleidoscope of hues. Coffee Art @ Souk Café
Inviting all artists, brush enthusiasts, community members and visitors.
Escape to the Karoo Souk during the Open Studios week and enjoy a coffee (or something else on our delicious menu) and order your espresso art set for only the price of an espresso.
Let your surroundings inspire you and paint the moment using coffee as a medium.
Come alone, come as a romantic duo, come as a family, or come as friends…but make sure you come and share in the love of coffee and art!
All artworks will be exhibited during the Open Studios 12th–16th June at the Karoo Souk showroom.
Artworks will be available for the price of R100, regardless of who the artist is!
Artists’ names will only be revealed to buyers once bought.
R50 from each artwork will be donated towards the Karoo Kreatif – an initiative to foster and develop talent within the arts and crafts sector in Prince Albert.
There is no limit to the number of espresso artworks one person can do… and feel free to sponsor an espresso for a community member.
Brushes will be supplied but remain the property of Koppie Koffie.

Join a writing workshop with Daniel Dercksen at The Writing Studio.
Daniel is a published film and theatre journalist with 40 years of experience. Since founding The Writing Studio in 1999, he has taught workshops and courses in creative writing, playwriting, and screenwriting across South Africa. The Write Journey is an interactive, intimate, and introspective journey into screenwriting, novel writing and playwriting that empowers you to take ownership of your creative journey and expression. A journey into the heart and soul of the story, the craft of writing, and ultimately the art of storytelling. Guided Walks on Wolwekraal Nature Reserve with Sue.
Spend an afternoon on Wolwekraal Nature Reserve with resident ecologist Sue Milton-Dean, whose knowledge of Karoo natural history, veld management and restoration brings the landscape quietly to life. Over two hours, the walk reveals what is so easily missed—the small, intricate worlds of plants and animals, and traces of those who walked here before.
It’s an experience that shifts how you see the veld, and a consistent highlight for visitors to Prince Albert.

Food demo and embroidery fun at The Yellow House
Join Petro – an accomplished chef and word smith. She will demonstrate some beautiful dishes using local produce and transport her guests to the colourful world of Dali and Picasso.
She will be reading passages to enhance the romance of food, colours, shapes and smells. Her guests would have the opportunity to express themselves by doing a simple embroidery of a word on a piece of cloth, to remember the event.

TOONZA Sketchbook Club
The 3 ToonZA Sessions come straight from Comic Con Cape Town, hosted by N.D.Mazin (‘a legendary pioneer of South African comics’ according to Comic Con). Irrespective of talent and experience levels, participants will all learn something about how to create characters, invent scenarios, jokes and storylines, draw backgrounds, do lettering and layout, and have more fun they’ve ever had with a pencil.
Visitors: R200 per session; R400 for all 3 sessions

Special guest: Roger Lucey, who lived in the same Durban hippy commune as N.D. (then known as Pooh) in the days of Vittoke in Azania, will do an unplugged performance of his song ‘The Road is Much Longer’.
STONE ANCESTORS OF THE SWARTBERG PASS

This popular ToonZA event, previously held at the Cape Point Nature Reserve, will take place in the Swartberg Pass between Eerstewater and Tweedewater. Participants must bring their own sketchbooks and drawing kit. The objective is to look for Stone Ancestors in the rocks and mountains. I will explain the mythology of Stone Ancestors while we walk for a bit, then we will all sit down and try to bring the rocks to life.
Movie Nights at The Showroom
The The Showroom Theatre is presenting two art-related films during Open Studios. The theatre – run by the Prince Albert Community Trust – has become one of Prince Albert’s cultural heartbeats. It’s a magnificent venue, perfect for a winter’s evening movie. Add popcorn and a glass of wine, both available at the bar at the theatre, for maximum enjoyment.

POLLOCK

Pollock transforms the biographical film into an unflinching study of artistic genius, self‑destruction, and the brutal labour of creation. Ed Harris’s portrayal of Jackson reveals a man whose brilliance and torment are inseparable. The film shows how painting offered him brief reprieves from a mind in constant turmoil, capturing the physical, bodily intensity of his drip‑painting process as a form of work rather than mystique. Pollock immerses viewers in the postwar New York art world, when patrons such as Peggy Guggenheim were reshaping the American avant‑garde. The film captures this ecosystem with texture and energy, showing how Pollock’s rise was as much about timing, community, and patronage as it was about raw talent. It reveals the mythology of the tortured artist, the ethics of care in creative partnerships, and the way art history is shaped by both brilliance and damage.

MAUDIE

Maudie reframes the life of Maud Lewis as a luminous assertion of selfhood through art, love, and stubborn joy. The film follows Maud (Sally Hawkins), a woman dismissed as “less than” by her family and community due to rheumatoid arthritis and a lifetime of being underestimated. The story shows how she constructs a life of meaning inside a tiny, weather‑beaten Nova Scotia shack, transforming it into a world of colour through her paintings. Maud paints not to become famous but to stay alive in spirit, to claim beauty where the world offers none. The film is a powerful conversation piece about resilience, the politics of care, the ethics of representing disability, and the way art can bloom in the margins — a reminder that greatness sometimes grows in the smallest rooms.

An evening with Toast Coetzer
Join us for an intimate gathering to hear live poetry from Toast. He’ll be reading from, among other things, his songbook The Last Days of Beautiful.
Toast Coetzer was born in Cradock, South Africa, in 1977. He is the lyricist and frontman of the spoken-word improv band The Buckfever Underground, which has released ten albums since 1998. His poetry and short stories have been published in several South African anthologies, he’s the author of Naweek (published in 2009), and has a couple of travel books on the shelves. He’s an editor, writer and photographer at Go/Weg magazines and has travelled widely in Africa. Toast co-presents The Unhappy Hour on Bush Radio and, along with Erns Grundling, is the editor of Ons Klyntji, which publishes poetry, short stories, cartoons, and photography.

Bok Drol Spoeg
What can be more Karoo than a good ‘ol BokDrol Spoeg?
The Sponge Squad™ will once again be presenting its annual competition – this time to coincide with Open Studios and Sam Reinders’ The Lang Begin Again exhibition.
The rules are easy – you get three organically grown drolls, and three attempts to spit them as far as possible. Furthest spit is the winner.
Two categories: Under 18 and Dinosaurs
Prize: a 15 x 20 print of your choice from The Land of Begin Again and, mostly, glory. Also a medal.
