Tiaan van Deventer is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in analogue photography. His practice sits at the intersection of aesthetic inquiry, scientific investigation, and subcultural study. Working in photographic emulsion, on canvas, and in sculptural form, he stages surreal and paradoxical tableaux that challenge conventional narratives and prioritize the act of making as a mode of inquiry.

Van Deventer’s work foregrounds disenfranchised communities, presenting their lived realities with stark, poetic clarity. His series Die Uitgewerptes, which documents homeless Afrikaner men affected by addiction, counters digitally curated, “picture-perfect” representations of contemporary life. This series was awarded the Conrad Theys 1st Prize at the 2018 Vuleka competition, reflecting his capacity to combine rigorous social critique with formal excellence.

Opposed to consumer-driven cultural paradigms and the commodification of art, Van Deventer seeks refuge in the contemplative landscapes of the Karoo and Prince Albert. His practice addresses urgent environmental concerns – climate change, pollution, and ecosystem loss – while offering a subtle yet resolute message of hope. He aims to reposition art as a transformative force for cultural and societal change.
