Andy Mason writes, draws and publishes as N.D.Mazin, Poynton Shute, ToonZA and Pooh. He is a veteran underground cartoonist, publisher and educator, recognised by the 2025 Cape Town Comic Con as a South African comics legend. Teamed up with Mary-Anne Botha, a longstanding curator of Prince Albert art, history and culture, Andy hopes to establish the Hope Street Studio and Art Garage (at the corner of Hope and Deurdrift Streets) as a venue for graphic storytelling in its many forms.

At Prince Albert Open Studios this year, the Hope Street Studio is offering the following opportunities:

The 3 ToonZA Sessions come straight from Comic Con Cape Town, hosted by N.D.Mazin (‘a legendary pioneer of South African comics’ according to Comic Con). Irrespective of talent and experience levels, participants will all learn something about how to create characters, invent scenarios, jokes and storylines, draw backgrounds, do lettering and layout, and have more fun they’ve ever had with a pencil.

SKETCHBOOK CLUB SESSION COSTS:
VISITORS: R200 per session; R400 for all 3 sessions
LOCALS: Whatever you can afford.
LIMITED NUMBERS: Maximum 8 per session.
UNDER 16s: Adult supervision to be arranged.

ART GARAGE OPENING EVENT (NO COST)

PERFORMANCE: Andy Mason will impersonate N.D.Mazin in a daring Analog AV Presentation entitled A VITTOKE IN AZANIA: TRUE CONFESSIONS OF AN UNDERGROUND CARTOONIST
Special guest ROGER LUCEY, who lived in the same Durban hippy commune as N.D. (then known as Pooh) in the days of Vittoke in Azania, will will do an unplugged performance of his song THE ROAD IS MUCH LONGER
